Barrow In Furness Airport (aka Barrow/Walney Island Airport) is located on Walney Island 1.7 miles northwest of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria,. The airport is owned and operated by BAE Systems, who operate private flights to various locations across the United Kingdom including Blackpool, Bristol-Filton, Farnborough, Glasgow International, London-Luton, Manchester, RAF Northolt, RAF Valley, Southampton and Warton. The Lakes Gliding Club also operates out of Barrow In Furness Airport. The airport has along and distinguished history, used as an airship station since World War I and for Commercial flights during the 1980s and 1990s. From 1982 until 1983, Air Ecosse flew to Edinburgh, Carlisle and Liverpool from Barrow In Furness using Twin Otter aircraft. In 2004 a study was completed which showed that a £1 million upgrade would attract thousands of business passengers a year flying to London and Europe and there are plans to convert Barrow Airport into an International Airport and the airfield has already completed an upgrade programme including Instrument Landing System installation for runway 35, resurfacing of runway 17/35, re-lighting of runway 17/35, security fencing around the entire airfield and other improvements.
