Focus DIY Review

Focus DIY was a privately owned chain of DIY stores serving the consumer DIY market sector in the UK. It was the fourth largest DIY store in the UK after B&Q, Homebase and Wickes. At its peak the company had 178 stores with 3000 employees, but had been running losses every year since 2007. Cerberus Capital purchased Focus DIY for £1 in June 2007 and attempted to tackle the financial problems. But in 2011, the company entered administration with Ernst & Young appointed as administrators. No buyer was found for the chain as a whole, but 55 stores were sold to B&Q, Wickes and B&M Bargains. The remaining 123 stores were closed by July 2011. The collapse of Focus DIY has sparked a wave of attacks on private equity firms as details revealed a decade of financial dealing in which buyout companies shared payouts of nearly £1bn and left Focus DIY floundering.
