SWEB Energy Review

SWEB Energy, formerly the South Western Electricity Board, was a British state owned Regional Electricity Company which operated in the South West of England and was privatised by the Thatcher government. Although the company was sold many times, the SWEB brand name survived until 2006. The original SWEB area is now operated by Western Power Distribution. SWEB Energy was formed in 1990 from the privatisation of the South Western Electricity Board, then in 1995 was bought by the American utility Southern Company. In 1999 they were bought by the distribution company Western Power Distribution and was split into Western Power to deal with the local distribution, metering and substations, with the SWEB brand name used as a retail energy utility. In 2003 SWEB was sold to EDF Energy, who have since discontinued the SWEB brand name, though many customers still use the name when referring to EDF Energy in the old SWEB area. SWEB is a subsidiary of EDF Energy, one of the largest energy companies in the UK. EDF Energy currently serves over 5 million customers with a large number of these customers located in the south-west of England and served by SWEB. They offer priority services to elderly and disabled customers with points for Nectar card holders on some tariffs.
