Scottish Water Review

Scottish Water are a publicly owned company, answerable to the Scottish Parliament. They provide 1.3 billion litres of drinking water every day and remove 840 million litres of waste water daily. Scottish Water operates under a regulatory framework established by the Water Services (Scotland) Act 2005. The Water Industry Commission for Scotland establishes the "lowest overall reasonable cost" for water through a benchmarking exercise and Scottish Water has a right of appeal against this price setting process through a reference to the UK Competition Commission. Scottish Water is accountable to the public through the Scottish Government. Essentially all of the water in Scotland comes from rain, which flows into streams, rivers, lochs and reservoirs. There are very strict laws that govern drinking water quality in the UK and Scottish Water supplies water to their customers which meets high standards set by the government and the European Union. They regularly sample and test the water both at the treatment works and at customers taps to ensure your water is safe. Home owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of water pipes within the boundaries of their property, whereas Scottish Water is responsible for the pipes that lead up to your property boundary, if one of these pipes outside your property boundary is burst you need to call them as soon as possible and they will get a team out to fix it. Please note that you are responsible for the pipes inside your property boundary.
