Cambridge Water Review

Cambridge Water supplies excellent quality, underground water that is pumped from boreholes which meets the standards of quality set in the European Community Directive 80/778/EEC and incorporated into legislation by the Water Act. The company was established by the Cambridge University and Town Waterworks Act which received the Royal Assent in 1853. This act set up the company to supply fresh water to the town and university as a commercial enterprise and it remained privately owned until 1996, when the company was purchased by South Staffordshire Plc. Under the Water Industry Act 1991, Cambridge Water are appointed by the Secretary of State as the Water Undertaker for an area which includes Cambridge and surrounding areas which extend to Ramsey in the north, Gamlingay in the west, Balsham in the east and Melbourn in the south. This area includes a population of around 315,000 of which 130,000 are Cambridge Water customers. The company’s household water bills are amongst the lowest bills in England and Wales. Cambridge Water bills also collects sewerage charges on behalf of Anglian Water, even though Cambridge Water is a water supply company and does not provide wastewater services. Supplying fresh, clean drinking water to people's homes for more than 160 years, Cambridge Water customers benefit from some of the highest quality drinking water in the UK.
