Hinckley & Rugby Building Society Review

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society was formed by the merger of the Hinckley Permanent Building Society founded in 1865, and the Rugby Provident Building Society which was established in 1861. The new society, established in 1983 now has total assets of nearly £600 million with over 70,000 savers and over 10,000 borrowers. The Society provides an extensive range of savings accounts and mortgages through 10 branches and 4 agencies, in the towns and cities of the East and West Midlands. The Hinckley & Rugby Building Society pioneered their volunteer scheme "Community First", which gives staff up to three days paid leave every year to get involved in local volunteer projects. The Hinckley & Rugby Building Society is proud of their mutual status and conversion to a bank is not an option. The society has decided that their future lies in providing the benefits of mutuality to their members – the investors and the borrowers. So rather than make profits for shareholders, the Hinckley & Rugby Building Society turn them into better interest rates for their customers. They promise investors that the interest rates on closed issues will be at least as good as the interest rate on an account with similar features from the current range, all members are invited to recommend candidates for directors when vacancies arise and they are committed to maintaining branches and agencies in local villages. The Hinckley & Rugby Building Society does not hard sell to get customers to take unrelated insurance products and they provide support for local community projects.
