The Dunfermline Building Society Review

The Dunfermline Building Society was the largest building society in Scotland and the 12th largest in the UK before its 2009 merger with Nationwide, but today is a trading division of Nationwide Building Society based in Dunfermline. In 2009, reports indicated the Society was no longer viable and is was put up for sale managed by the Bank of England. This led to the acquisition of the Society's branches, loans and deposits by the Nationwide Building Society, with the Bank of England assuming control of around£1billion in commercial lending and the poorer-quality and shared ownership mortgages. The Dunfermline Building Society was established in 1869 in the town of Dunfermline from which it takes its name. Over the years they acquired over 20 other building societies including the Stenhousemuir, Peebles, Fourth Fifeshire Investment Company, the Stirlingshire, and the Edinburgh and Paisley Building Society. They were one of the first Building Societies to launch a telephone banking service, the Dunfermline Direct, in Spring 1999. The merger with Nationwide has allowed the Dunfermline to increase the financial security of their customers and their money. Their professional Financial Planning Managers can offer personal financial advice, plus there are a range of investment products on offer which can have tax benefits for customers.
