Bristol Airport serves the city of Bristol and the surrounding area and the ninth busiest airport in the United Kingdom, catering for over 5 million passengers per annum. The airport was created in 1927 when a group of local businessmen started a flying club at Filton Aerodrome. Today Bristol Airport is host to a range of airlines including Aer Lingus, Air France, Air Malta, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines (Flybe), EasyJet, Skybus, KLM, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. Located on the A38, just 8 miles from Bristol city centre, the airport is easy to access by road and is signposted from the M5. The airport has an enviable safety record with the last serious incident being in 1970 when a Vickers Viscount was damaged beyond economic repair in a heavy landing.
