T-Mobile is one of Deutsche Telekom AG's mobile communications subsidiaries outside Germany. The T-Mobile brand is used only outside of Germany in Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and the UK, plus in the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Around the world T-mobile subscribers have a combined total of over 150 million, making them the seventeenth-largest mobile-phone service provider in the world in terms of subscribers and the third-largest multinational after Vodafone and Telefónica. T-Mobile in the UK began as Mercury One2One, operating the world's first GSM 1800 mobile network and owned by the now-defunct Mercury Communications. They later became known as One 2 One, then purchased by Deutsche Telekom and rebranded as T-Mobile in 2002. T-Mobile UK offers pay-as-you-go and pay-monthly contract phones. The contracts consist of set amounts of minutes and "flexible boosters" which are bundles allowing the customer to customise their plan on a month to month basis to suit their needs. In 2008 the high-speed 3G and HSDPA networks operated by T-Mobile UK and 3 in the UK merged o create the largest HSDPA mobile phone network in the country.
