The Environment Agency is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body responsible to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and a Welsh Government. The organisation is a sponsored body responsible to the Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development, with the aim being to protect and improve the environment, and to promote sustainable development. The Environment Agency covers the whole of England and Wales and in a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, also exercises some of its functions over parts of the Scottish borders. Employing over 11,000 staff, the agency is funded in part from DEFRA (the UK government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and the Welsh Assembly Government.
