The AA Breakdown Review

The Automobile Association (The AA), was founded in 1905 as the UK's first motoring association, they demutualised in 1999 becoming a private limited company and today provide a wide range of motoring based products and services such as insurance, driving lessons, breakdown cover, loans and motoring advice. In 2007 they merged with Saga Group to form Acromas Holdings. Incredibly they were formed originally to help motorists avoid police speed traps after the introduction of the Motor Car Act 1903 with new penalties for breaking the speed limit including fines, endorsements and the possibility of jail for driving offences! They since introduced AA Routes and began inspecting hotels and restaurants to issue AA Star Classification. By 1939 they were looking after 725,000 members, which equated to 35% of all car owners in the UK at the time. In 1949 they launched a night-time breakdown and recovery service, initially just in London but eventually nationally. They began broadcasting AA Roadwatch traffic reports 1972 on commercial radio and the AA Relay service was introduced in 1973, to deliver broken-down vehicles, driver and passengers to anywhere in the UK. Today AA expert patrols fix 4 out of every 5 cars at the roadside with most repairs completed in less than 30 minutes, in the UK every 9 seconds someone is rescued by the AA!
