Yorkshire Water is a water supply and treatment utility company which services West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, part of North Lincolnshire, most of North Yorkshire and part of Derbyshire. Formerly the Yorkshire Water Authority, the company was created by the Water Act 1973, and privatised in 1989. The company today is part of the Kelda Group and is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991. In addition to water supply and treatment, Yorkshire Water promotes recreational use of its many reservoirs with activities including fishing, horse riding, cycling, water sports and bird watching. Yorkshire Water has something of a chequered past with fines received for breaches of environmental law and from being the most hated water company during the year of the drought in 1995. But in recent years they have turned around being voted "Utility Company of the year" by Utility Week magazine three years in a row.
