Comedy Store Manchester Review

The Comedy Store was first opened in Soho, London in 1979, named after the famous Comedy Store club in the USA. The club was the focus of the alternative comedy boom in the 1980's and helped jump start the careers of many comedians, including Paul Merton, French & Saunders, Alexei Sayle, Craig Ferguson, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Ben Elton and Simon Pegg. A rough and ready venue back in the day, where comics were forced to change in a broom cupboard and relieve themselves in a sink! Today the Comedy Store provides the most up-to-date humour in the country and the chance to see the newest up and coming comedians with open mic talent nights. In 2000 The Comedy Store's long-awaited second venue was opened in Deansgate Locks in the heart of Manchester with appearances from Tim Clark, Rhona Cameron, Julian Clary, Mike Gunn, Fred MacAulay, Sean Meo, Paul Merton and John Thompson celebrating the dawning of a new era. The Comedy Store, Manchester joined forces with Manchester City Council in the same year to stage a New Year's Eve party held in a 1000-seater marquee on Little Peter Street and entitled More Laughs in Manchester. This event was a sell-out show and featured 3 hours of Stand-Up from seven comedians plus a live link with the rest of Manchester for a world record-breaking sing-along attempt.
