Blackwell Books is a British academic book retailer that was founded in 1879 by Benjamin Blackwell. Based in Oxford, they employ over 1000 staff and operate a chain of 45 shops around the UK, in addition to an accounts and library supply service. The company expanded rapidly in the 1990s with acquisitions of the Heffers brand and the James Thin academic chain. But in 2007 they sold of their publishing arm and in 2009 they sold off part of the company's library supply chain service. The company spent several years experiencing losses but returned to profit in 2012. The company remains at least part Blackwell family owned, but has much of the shares distributed amongst employees in the same way as the John Lewis partnership.
