Allied Carpets Review

Allied Carpets is one of the largest retailers of floor coverings in the UK with a network of large superstores and some High Street stores. They are the second-largest retailer of carpets in the UK. and were founded by Harold Plotnek in Birmingham in the 1950's. By 1989 Allied Carpets had over 180 UK shops and in 1993 was bought by the Asda Group, trading as Carpetland until financial collapse in 1990, then emerging again thanks to a management buyout in 1991 with 85 stores. In 1994 the company name was changed from Carpetland to Allied Carpets and in 1996 was listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 1999 the company was bought by Tapis Saint-Maclou of Wattrelos, France's largest carpet retailer. In 2009, it was announced that the company had entered administration, being one of several high profile retail chains to fall into receivership during the recession. Administrators sold 51 of the company's stores to Allied Carpets Retail Limited saving 400 jobs and keeping the company afloat but many stores were closed with the inevitable loss of jobs. In 2012 the company entered administration again and was sold to a company affiliated with Floors-2-Go in an administration deal.
